Quick Comeback Causes Extension in Close Battle
WAKE FOREST, NC--Early lead by the Eagles lasted until the 3rd inning when Franklin rallied and quickly score 4 runs and closing the gap. In the bottom of the 6th, the game was all square and forced to go into extra innings. The game would be decided by Ruby Helms who created a key play, grabbing the EWA win.
In the first, East Wake was able to capitalize on a defense error by Franklin and snatch two runs. The Eagles continued to add to their small stride by getting a run after freshman Rachel Hardy hit a single. FA was able to get a run of their own in the bottom of the second after senior Rachel Thompson walked in a runner.
EWA had a strong third inning by scoring five off singles by sophomore Sydney Brantley and junior Rachel Stacy. Also contributing was senior Sha’kayla Ellis who hit a double. Not only did the Eagles have a good scoring inning, but Franklin answered in the bottom half of the inning with 4 runs off a single, double, and triple. EWA had a defensive error in the bottom of the third that also contributed to the Patriots' barrage.
The game remained calm until the bottom of the sixth when Franklin stole a base and tied the score at 8. Three intense, scoreless innings ensued until the 10th inning when sophomore Ruby Helms drove in what turned out to be the winnings runs with a double, bumping the Eagles ahead, 10-8. The host Patriots were unable to answer in their final at-bat as Thompson sat them down in order.
For the second straight game the Eagles' saw a revival of their offensive prowess, finishing the night with a dominating 13 hits, led by Ruby Helms and her 3 RBI. Thompson went 7 innings on the bump, allowing just 6 hits and striking out four.
