East Wake Academy, Neuse Charter announce start of County Cup
ZEBULON, NC – Two nearby charter schools are taking their burgeoning rivalry to the next level. East Wake Academy and Neuse Charter, separated by less than 30 miles, will begin competing in all sports during the 2015-2016 school year for the right to take home the County Cup.
The two schools have been regularly playing each other at both the middle school and high school levels for quite some time now, but being from different conferences has held what would seem to be a natural rivalry in check. Those shackles have now officially been shed.
“We definitely consider Neuse one of our main rivals” said East Wake Academy Athletic Director, Bret Bystricky. “There is almost a brotherhood feel to the charter schools, and we really try to schedule other charters who are similar in size, like-mindedness, and comparable to our own programs.”
There will be three points awarded for a win in any sport, one point for a tie, and none for a loss. The school that accrues the most points by year’s end will claim ownership of the County Cup, which will be a traveling trophy much like the Stanley Cup.
“Neuse Charter has enjoyed the interaction with East Wake coaches and student-athletes over the past few years,” said Cougars AD Terry Tippett. “A mutual respect has developed between the two schools, as both face similar obstacles in growing and maintaining athletic programs. The County Cup challenge adds a degree of excitement for the participants, as well as parents of the schools.”
The schools have agreed to the competition at both the middle school and high school levels and will open up the competition with a varsity volleyball & men’s soccer match on August 18th at Neuse Charter.
